Classic for Peace

“The title of the concert speaks for itself – “Classic for Peace”. It is a symbol of understanding between people of different cultures and nationalities that contributes to further spreading of peace and mutual goodwill, strengthening the ties of friendship”, says conductor and composer Dirk Brossé.

Music is a language which needs no translation – it appeals to everybody regardless of a person’s nationality, age of political viewpoints. “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent”, Victor Hugo once wrote.

“Classic for Peace” project is a bright symphonic program performed by “INSO-Lviv” Academic Symphony Orchestra under the baton of a Belgian conductor and composer Sir Dirk Brossé. The concert is held on occasion of the Belgian National holiday – The King’s Day - that has been observed since 1866. It symbolizes unity of the Belgian nation in its political, cultural and linguistic diversity.

“Classic for Peace” concert is also a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to listen to the music being conducted by the composer himself since the program includes pieces by Maestro Brossé: Cello concerto (2014), orchestral music as well as vocal and symphonic cycle based on the lyrics (haiku) by Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council in 2010-2014. The concert features the soloists: vocal - young talented Belgian soprano Hanne Roos; cello – Ukrainian-born musician who gained musical education in Belgium Artem Shmahaylo.

Dirk Brossé composed the piece “For the Unknown” especially for this event having honoured in such a way the memory of all those who gave their lives in a fight for the freedom and peace in their homeland.

Dirk Brossé is an extremely prolific composer whose portfolio comprises some 400 works, including concerti, oratorios, lieder, chamber music and symphonic works, film and musicals soundtracks that have been performed all over the world. In 2013 «Parade's End» TV series (music by Dirk Brossé ) broadcast by BBC, HBO and VRT was nominated for EMMI Award.

Dirk Brossé has conducted all the world leading symphony orchestras, among them, London Symphony Orchestra, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra London, l’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Hong Kong Philharmonic and many others.

Music by Dirk Brossé is distinguished by its brightness, it is full of colours and emotions, life and optimism. Maestro Brossé strives to make his music sincere, clear and understandable to the audience and, thus, it appeals to all and everyone.

“Classic for Peace” is a manifestation of European, multicultural choice of Ukraine. The event enjoys the patronage of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Ukraine. The event co-organizer is Lviv Regional Philharmonia.
